UGC NET Qualification
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has set certain eligibility criteria for candidates applying for the National Eligibility Test (NET) exam. General, Unreserved, and General-EWS candidates must have obtained at least 55% marks in their Master’s degree program (without rounding off).
Candidates who are currently pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course, or who have appeared for their final year qualifying examination and are awaiting results, or those whose qualifying examinations have been delayed, can also apply for the test. However, such candidates will be considered eligible for JRF/Assistant Professor positions only after passing their Master’s degree or equivalent examination with at least 55% marks (50% marks for OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD/Third gender category candidates).
These candidates must complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination within two years of the NET result, failing which they will be disqualified.
Candidates belonging to the Third gender category can avail of the same fee, age, and eligibility criteria relaxation as SC/ST/PwD categories. The qualifying cut-offs for this category will be the lowest among those for SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL/General-EWS categories in the relevant subject.
Candidates who hold a Ph.D. degree and completed their Master’s level examination by September 19, 1991, are eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks. This means that they need to score a minimum of 50% marks (instead of 55%) to be eligible to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET), irrespective of the date of declaration of their result.
UGC NET Exam Pattern 2022-23
The National Eligibility Test (NET) comprises of two papers, both of which will have objective-type multiple-choice questions. There will be no break between the papers. Each question carries two marks, and candidates will be awarded two marks for each correct response. There is no negative marking for incorrect responses.
